MJ Fitness is one of the best local gyms in KC- everything from the workouts to the trainers to the owners; I cannot say enough good things! I first joined MJ Fitness January of 2019 after realizing that years of inconsistent dieting, lack of commitment, and numerous unsuccessful attempts at being active had gotten the best of me. The owner Shelley is an amazing coach and mentor. Tori and Jake are always encouraging everyone with high energy and a smile. I always look forward to my classes, even though I know they are always challenging. The best part is that you can join classes at any fitness level. 18 months in and I feel great, my stamina is high, and I have learned a lot about my body and my health. I am currently 7 months pregnant and still going strong! I can’t wait to see what my results will be like a year post-baby. I have been training with Shelley at MJ Fitness since March of 2018 and it has been the most life changing experience I’ve had in my life. It became a part of my lifestyle. When I started training with Shelley, I wasn’t in the best shape and I was struggling with my own personal confidence not only physically but mentally as well. Since I have been training, I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been! I even continued bootcamp throughout my whole pregnancy! Shelley and Torie made me feel comfortable and modified any workouts to make it as safe as possible but still challenged me! They motivated me to push through each and every workout and not to cheat myself. They taught me proper form and always made sure to answer any questions I had. Not only is Shelley my trainer but she became a very special friend/family member in my life and I will forever be grateful for her! The MJ Fitness atmostphere is so welcoming and everyone there makes you feel a part of the MJ family! I have been going to MJ Fitness for over 10+ plus years. The gym is immaculate and well maintained. The respect and gratitude for Jake Ortiz and their staff is immeasurable.
When we first met, Jake asked me what my goals were and what I wanted to accomplish in my workouts. He listened to what I had to say and put a plan of action in place. It has been an amazing journey experiencing his expertise and interest in my wellbeing. Jake’s passion for self-learning and integrating that into our workouts is evident in the results of my overall physical health. We worked through the aches and pains in a manner that allowed me to continue my workouts and gain strength in a safe and effective way. When I started, one of my goals was 225 lbs. on the bench press… With Jake’s help I was able to obtain a personal best of 355 lbs. At 50+ years of age! Whether it’s training a client or mentoring other trainers, I believe the single greatest characteristic that distinguishes Jake as a leader in the personal training field is a heartfelt and self-evident sense of caring for the client. I have witnessed results in the clients he trains and the respect that each client has for Jake. As a Personal Trainer he is truly a trailblazer.
“If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.” This statement is something my trainer, Jake, says to me at least once a week. In its simplicity, it validates that what he is asking me to do is hard yet encourages me to push through and do my best. Each time I hear him say it, I’m reminded that I am making the choice to invest in myself. There are no quick fixes to one’s health goals, but there are great trainers at MJ Fitness that will listen to what you want, assess where you currently are, and work with you to develop a plan of gradual and attainable changes that will help you reach your personal goals if you do the work. Not everyone working out at MJ Fitness has the same goals, but what we do have is a family-like atmosphere of support, encouragement, and commraderie.
